    Talks continue on sale of Trenton suburban water lines

    TRENTON - Despite statements from a top city official implying that a proposed sale of the Trenton Water Works suburban water system could be in jeopardy, parties familiar with the negotiations surrounding the sale said Wednesday that talks are continuing.

    "Yes, we are still in negotiations trying to work out something that's going to be beneficial with all of the involved parties," said Lendell Jones, a spokeswoman for New Jersey American Water Co., the proposed buyer of the infrastructure.

    Jones said the company was still optimistic that the deal could occur.

    Man charged in East Windsor stabbing

    EAST WINDSOR -- A man was stabbed with a folding pocket knife during an argument with an acquaintance in a wooded area just off the 600 block of Mercer Street Tuesday afternoon, police said.

    Carlos Quezada, 45, and Armando Diaz-Lopez, 48, both of Hightstown apparently knew each other before they began arguing around 5:25 p.m. Police said the argument escalated and Quezada lunged at Diaz-Lopez with the knife. Diaz-Lopez received a puncture wound and a laceration to his left hand, but refused medical attention.

    Police believe driver ran red light, causing Route 1 crash

    WEST WINDSOR -- A serious crash on Route 1 Tuesday night apparently was caused by a driver running a red light, police said.

    Police said that Keith Toth, a 48-year-old Plainsboro resident, was driving north on Route 1 around 11:30 p.m. A car driven by Brooke O'Brien, 19 of Hightstown, was heading east on Washington Road (Route 571) into the Route 1 intersection at the same time. (See earlier story and photo).

    Police said it appears that O'Brien went through the intersection when the light was red, colliding with Toth's car.

    Teen escapes from car trunk after being abducted

    BRISTOL TOWNSHIP -- A 17-year-old who was thrown into the trunk of a car by three armed men managed to escape by jumping out while the car was moving, police said.

    The unnamed teen was sitting in his mother's vehicle on Liberator Street just before 10 p.m. when he was approached by the trio, who displayed handguns.

    Ordering the teen into the trunk, the armed men got into the car and began driving away. Using an emergency interior trunk release, the 17-year-old opened the trunk, then jumped from the moving vehicle, police said. He ran to a neighbor's house and asked her to call the police. Officers arrived and, about 25 minutes later, found the car abandoned and unoccupied on Marie Lowe Drive.

    $27G bail kept for alleged writer of threatening letters sent to Times readers

    A Superior Court judge on Wednesday kept the bail at $27,000 for a Ewing man accused of writing threatening notes to those who sent letters to the editor of The Times.

    Edward Dent, 68, is charged with making terroristic threats and stalking, said Assistant Prosecutor Stephanie Katz. Katz said that postal inspectors had received complaints about the letters that Dent allegedly sent to readers.

    The letters, which included written materials and handwritten messages and cartoons, included anti-Semitic and anti-homosexual statements to racial and religious diatribes.

    Four injured in collision on Route 1 in West Windsor

    WEST WINDSOR - Four people were injured - one seriously - in a two-vehicle accident that occurred late Tuesday night, emergency officials at the scene confirmed.

    The collision between a car and a pickup truck happened about 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 1 and Washington Road (Route 571).

    One of the car's passengers was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by firefighters.

    West Windsor police investigate a two-vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Route 1 and Washington Road (Route 571) about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Four people were injured, included one man who was trapped in the wreckage of one of the vehicles and had to be extricated by firefighters who cut away the roof.

    2 hurt in Trenton home invasion

    TRENTON -- One city man was shot and a teenager was pistol-whipped during a home invasion early Monday, police reported on Tuesday.

    Police said that around 12:10 a.m., two armed suspects entered an apartment on South Overbrook Avenue and accosted a 17-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man.

    Police said $30 was taken from the teenager before he was pistol-whipped, leaving him with a fractured nose, and the 26-year-old was shot in the leg just before the suspects left.

    Suspect in Trenton street robbery leaves woman uninjured

    TRENTON -- An 18-year-old woman was robbed while walking home on the first block of Fairway Drive late Sunday, police revealed on Tuesday.

    The woman was walking home around 11:30 p.m. when police said she dropped a $100 bill on the ground. A suspect came up to her, placed a semiautomatic pistol to the back of her head and demanded money and jewelry. Police said the woman surrendered $300 and assorted jewelry. She was uninjured.

    The suspect fled immediately after the robbery. Police ask anyone with information on the case to call Detective Quinton June at (609) 989-4140 or the Trenton Police confidential tipline at (609) 989-3663.
