  • New York Giants' Antonio Pierce practicing as police wait

    by Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 9:32 PM

Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce looks around during practice at the Giants practice field in East Rutherford Wednesday.
Antonio Pierce's role with the Giants hasn't changed -- and isn't expected to any time soon.

The middle linebacker is being investigated by police for his role in teammate Plaxico Burress' accidental shooting of himself at a Manhattan nightclub, but Pierce was back at work at Giants Stadium Wednesday and is preparing to play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

"He is practicing," coach Tom Coughlin said, "and I fully expect that he will continue."

New York Giants regrouping under intense glare

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 8:35 PM

Giants wide receiver Steve Smith talks with reporters at his locker after practice at Giants Stadium Wednesday.
Everything was dissected Wednesday, from the way the Giants players bounced around the indoor practice facility to the tone of their answers about Plaxico Burress' suspension for the remainder of the season.

Even the quietness of the locker room, which was likely due to the fact most players were elsewhere eating or lifting at the time, was presented as evidence this team was in mourning for a player who divorced himself from the organization with a self-inflicted bullet wound Saturday night in a Manhattan nightclub.

"It's not (quiet)," guard Chris Snee said to interrupt one reporter's question. "But go ahead."

New York Giants' statement in response to reports of a Burress cover-up

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 7:40 PM

Giants VP of communications Pat Hanlon released a statement a few minuts ago in response to a report in today's New York Post about a doctor being summoned to the emergency room to treat Plaxico Burress on Friday night. The report states it's unclear who made the call to the doctor. Here's the Giants' statement from Hanlon to clarify the situation on their end:

NFLPA plans to file a grievance on Burress' behalf

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 6:02 PM

The NFL Players' Association will soon be coming to Plaxico Burress' defense.

"The NFLPA is still reviewing the actions taken by the New York Giants relating to Plaxico Burress, but we intend to file a grievance challenging those actions, as we believe that Burress' rights have been violated under the CBA," the union said in a statement this afternoon.

It's unclear exactly how his rights were violated in the NFLPA's eyes. That's surely to be determined once the grievance is filed. This could be a long and ugly battle.

Giants turn to football after losing Burress for season

    by Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 2:08 PM

Mathias Kiwanuka says the Giants are past Plax.

The day after the Giants learned they'll be without receiver Plaxico Burress for the rest of the season as a result of Saturday's incident when he accidentally shot himself in the thigh, "it's already a dead issue" in the locker room, DE Mathias Kiwanuka said.

A late look back to New York Giants at Washington Redskins

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 1:10 PM

It's Wednesday and the Giants have moved on to the Eagles. I, however, have the luxury of taking my sweet time and looking back if I so choose. And since you asked so nicely (eye roll), I'm going to give a quick game review of Sunday's win over the Redskins. Quick, because the Plax situation put me way behind this week.

Plaxico Burress' roster spot has already been filled.

The Giants signed DT Leger Douzable off their own practice squad. The 6-4, 305-pound Douzable was an undrafted free agent with the Vikings this season and was cut at the end of training camp. The Giants signed him to their practice squad in September.

Attorney 'confident' New York Giants' Pierce will be cleared of wrongdoing

    by Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger
    Tuesday December 02, 2008, 8:45 PM

The attorney for Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce is confident that his client will be cleared of any wrongdoing related to the Plaxico Burress incident.
Antonio Pierce didn't stop to talk to reporters outside Giants Stadium Tuesday, but the Giants linebacker will speak with authorities soon, according to his lawyer.

Michael Bachner said his office has been in communication with the New York Police Department and the New York County District Attorney's Office to schedule a time for them to interview Pierce, who is under investigation by police for his role in teammate Plaxico Burress' accidental shooting of himself in the thigh early Saturday morning in New York.

"It is our intention to cooperate fully in their investigation," Bachner said. "We'll continue to do everything in that regard."

New York Giants suspend Burress, place him on non-football injury list

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Tuesday December 02, 2008, 5:56 PM

Plaxico Burress may have played his last game for the Giants.
Plaxico Burress drove his gray custom van out of the parking lot at Giants Stadium Tuesday afternoon, speeding past reporters and photographers on his way to the highway.

The hurried departure may well have been the wide receiver's final exit from the Meadowlands as a member of the Giants, the team he helped lead to a Super Bowl victory 10 months ago.

Three days after Burress accidentally shot himself with an illegal handgun in a Manhattan nightclub - and one day after police charged him with two felony counts - Giants officials placed him on the non-football injury list, making him ineligible to play for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

New York Giants make one roster move - and it doesn't involve Burress

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Tuesday December 02, 2008, 4:59 PM

If the Giants are going to make a roster move involving WR Plaxico Burress, it apparently won't come today.

The team made only one move today - signing DB Travonti Johnson to the practice squad, according to someone who's seen the official NFL transaction report. If that name sounds familiar, give yourself a gold star because Johnson was an undrafted free agent from Central Florida the Giants signed in 2007. He was waived during training camp and has been unsigned since then. Johnson will take the place of DT Jeremy Clark, who was signed to the active roster on Saturday.

Still waiting on word from Burress. There could be a statement from the team shortly, I'm told.

Giants conducting workouts with potential futures/practice squad players

Even with the Plaxico Burress situation hovering over the Giants, the team is still paying attention to its daily duties as an NFL franchise. The Giants have been conducting workouts with players they could potentially sign to a futures contract in January -- or possibly to take Jeremy Clark's vacated spot on the practice squad.

The only name I've heard so far is Tyler Palko, the former Pitt quarterback.

Pierce, Bradshaw join Burress at stadium

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Tuesday December 02, 2008, 10:52 AM

Giants LB Antonio Pierce and RB Ahmad Bradshaw arrived at Giants Stadium shortly after WR Plaxico Burress this morning. Bradshaw came in through the normal players' entrance, but Pierce saw the pen of media members waiting at that entrance while driving up Stadium Road and detoured to go in through the Giants' offices at the North Gate.

Perhaps the three players, who were all at the Latin Quarter Friday night, are here together to meet with team and league officials. But several other players have been at the stadium this morning, so we can't say for sure.

WR Plaxico Burress reports to Giants Stadium

Agent: New York Giants' Ward in the clear on Burress incident

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Monday December 01, 2008, 11:56 PM

Giants RB Derrick Ward, who has been mentioned in several reports as having accompanied Plaxico Burress and Antonio Pierce to the Latin Quarter night club on Friday, is no longer a person of interest to the NYPD, according to his agent, Peter Schaffer.

Schaffer said Ward told the police he was at a Thanksgiving-weekend charity event on Madison Ave. earlier on Friday night. Schaffer said the NYPD checked out Ward's alibi - even looking at the video surveillance footage of the event - and agreed Ward was not with Burress at the time of the incident.

An NYPD spokesman declined comment, saying he couldn't speak about an ongoing investigation.

Coverage by media will test New York Giants' focus

    by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
    Monday December 01, 2008, 10:20 PM

The media attention surrounding the Plaxico Burress incident will test the Giants' ability to focus on the game at hand.
As an injured player -- he had a hamstring injury in addition to the gunshot wound -- Plaxico Burress is required by the team to go to Giants Stadium today for treatment. If not, he's subject to yet another fine.

Burress was excused Monday because of his hearing, but plenty of Giants players were at the stadium on what could have been a day off to get some extra workouts, film study and treatments. As they left the building in the afternoon, they encountered three reporters and a television camera crew. A few of the players stopped to chat, but none of them wanted to address the Burress situation.
