Another water main break in Hoboken

by Carly
Friday December 26, 2008, 5:21 PM

Crews repair a broken water main in Hoboken today.

We predicted that with the temperatures changes there'd be water main breaks in Hoboken -- and there was one today at the 7th Street Dunkin' Donuts.

It was only a small main that broke and crews repaired it so leaking water wouldn't freeze on the crosswalk.

Lots of fender-benders today in Hoboken

by Carly
Friday December 19, 2008, 1:51 PM

A Jersey City Incinerator truck is filled with salt to battle slippery road conditions in today's snowstorm.

So, how are Hoboken roads looking today?

Hoboken Now called Central Garage, the people in charge of salting Hoboken roads, and the HPD. They've had "quite a few" reports of accidents already today, we're told. Luckily, no accidents involved injuries, but there have been some fender-benders throughout town.

Where are the particularly bad spots in Hoboken?

Boston Chicken (?) in Hoboken

Just a middle-of-the-week observation: It's been a while since I've seen a "Boston Chicken" anywhere (the company officially changed their name to Boston Market in 1995), but I guess nobody bothered to tell the one in Hoboken that.

Cluck-U Chicken coming soon to Hoboken

by Carly
Wednesday December 03, 2008, 2:10 PM

Work on the storefront yesterday. Nice and purple.

We heard the Cluck-U Chicken that's being built on Washington Street (next door to the Blimpie) is set to open in the next three weeks.

Cluck-U Chicken will be located in what used to be Juice Garden. That place was always kind of empty but they made me a really good lemonade once.

No, no fire in uptown Hoboken today

by Carly
Tuesday November 18, 2008, 1:34 PM

Still floating. The Hoboken Fire Department's Fire and Rescue boat.

Don't be alarmed if you heard fire trucks racing through uptown Hoboken twenty minutes ago.

There was a false alarm on Hudson Street. Extreme temperature variations -- such as when it goes from warm to very cold, like the past couple days -- can cause fire alarms to falsely go off.

Firefighters also swung by to check on their fire and rescue boat, which is docked in the Shipyard Marina.

Bloom spa moving into Fowad

Hoboken Now was on my way to the Hoboken public library this morning when we noticed work outside what used to be Fowad discount clothing store. You may have heard Bloom spa will be moving into that location.

Cold rain and flooding in Hoboken today

by Carly
Tuesday October 28, 2008, 12:02 PM

A car drives through the flooded intersection of Newark Street and Park Avenue this morning.

Of course, a cold, wet day in Hoboken wouldn't be complete without some flooded streets. Hoboken Now ventured out to the closest, flood-prone spot by our "office" (the downtown Starbucks). The intersection of Newark and Park looked like that at around 11 today. And Henderson Street entering Hoboken at Observer Highway turned into some kind of small inland sea.

So that's only two spots around Hoboken today. Have you noticed bad flooding in your neighborhood?

Rain and wind knock down tree branches outside Onieal's

About twenty minutes ago, a combination of rain and wind knocked down several big branches from a tree outside Onieal's pub/restaurant at the corner of Fourth and Park. That stretch of Fourth Street is temporarily shut down as workers clear the branches from the street.

Obama t-shirts cause controversy in downtown Hoboken

by Carly
Friday August 29, 2008, 2:52 PM

The offensive shirt.

A street vendor hawking Obama-themed t-shirts caused quite a stir at the intersection of Newark and Hudson streets in Hoboken this afternoon.

"It's insulting for me to see," one woman angrily told the vendor, who is named Frank Bongiorno. She didn't want to give her name, but said she works as a real estate agent in town.

After confronting Bongiorno, she told me, "My husband was a Vietnam veteran and when he came home, people called him a baby-killer and worse. He died for his country from complications from Agent Orange three years ago. How can you put this man's face on a shirt like that when he would not salute the flag?," she asked, referring to Obama. "How can you sell a t-shirt like that?"

Hey, Hoboken, what are doing for Labor Day weekend?

by Carly

Hoboken Now harassed a couple people on the wild streets of Hoboken today, and asked them if they have any fun plans for the three-day weekend.

"I'm going to Bridgehampton -- one of my girlfriends has a house there. We're taking the Jitney there and we'll kayak, go to the beach, barbeque, do the club/bar scene. I normally go 'down the shore' but this year, it's the Hamptons. Pedestrian struck at 1st and Washington

by Carly
Thursday August 28, 2008, 5:06 PM

A crowd gathers around the injured man on Washington Street this afternoon.

A pedestrian was hit by a truck just a few minutes ago at the notoriously bad intersection of First and Washington streets.

We're still not sure how the accident happened, but from one resident who lives nearby: "This corner is known for being bad. People run the red light coming up First Street, or they make a right on red, even though they're not supposed to. And pedestrians cross the street all the time when they're not supposed to, talking on their cell phones," he said, watching the injured man being lifted in the ambulance. "It's all part of the 'me' generation -- it's my street so you have to get out of the way."

"And cops go by here all the time, talking on their cell phones," he added.

Bluefishing in Hoboken

Barnett says he's been out here fishing every Saturday for the past six years. "Pier A is the best place in Hoboken to fish. The 14th Street pier would be a good spot but the current is too fast there. You get bluefish, striped bass and flounder here."

And you thought your morning commute was bad ...

by Carly
Wednesday August 06, 2008, 2:32 PM

*Update: 2:30 p.m. Well, we have some more information on how this car-in-the-hole incident happened. According to Fred Moret, an employee with Hoboken's Department of Environmental Services who responded to the water main break, the woman came out of her apartment building on Park Ave. just before 8 a.m. today. She walked past the water main break and United Water trucks to her SUV, seemingly not to notice the giant crater in the middle of the street. She pulled her SUV out and drove towards the hole.

The United Water trucks moved out of the way to let her pass but workers started screaming at her to stop driving as she approached the hole. "She went two more feet and she was in the hole," said Moret. The woman was shaken, but not hurt. She climbed out of the car and using a flatbed truck, city workers pulled her car out of the sinkhole.

A Hoboken Now reader sent us these photos of the car that somehow drove right into the giant sinkhole on Park Avenue this morning, caused by a water main break.

Carrying St. Ann through the streets of Hoboken

by Carly

That parade you hear winding through the streets of Hoboken today is the procession of St. Ann. Every year, St. Ann's festival culminates in the 120-plus female members Hoboken's St. Ann's Guild carrying a statue of St. Ann over eight Hoboken city blocks.

The statue of St. Ann weighs 600 pounds. On a hot day like today, isn't she heavy?

"We say she's getting heavier every year since she eats too much pasta," one St. Ann's parishioner told me. "We usually carry her about two blocks and then switch. And they used to carry her barefoot, too."

'Big John' in Hoboken

Hey Hoboken, ever wondered what that bizarre tower on the Hoboken waterfront is?

Well, we have. And, believe it or not, the tower, part of Stevens Institute of Technology and overlooking Sinatra park soccer fields, was at one time a giant toilet.

It was built by Stevens to aid in the design of the World Trade Center. The tower was created to study plumbing in high-rise buildings and some of the engineering developed there was used in the twin towers.
