Ray of Hope seen for National Hotel

LIKE AN ANCHOR STORE in a mall, the National Hotel anchors Frenchtown's shopping district. When the boards are removed from the downstairs doors and windows, the borough will seem much more inviting.FRENCHTOWN -- The boarded-up National Hotel, a dreary sight that greets all visitors driving into town on Route 12, may soon enjoy a rebirth under new management, according to Councilman Chris Poh.
The mortgage is held by a California investor, said Mr. Poh at a recent Borough Council meeting. The unnamed investor wants to gain ownership of the property and its liquor license. He described the mortgage-holder as someone who "knows what he's doing," someone who was "faced with a similar situation in Atlantic City and prevailed."

The shopkeepers were all smiles, however, as they gathered recently to call attention to the finish of the $1,552,000 Bridge Street uplift.
Whether due to the economy, the road work or the combination, business was off significantly for a while, said Tracy Stephan of This And That On The Corner. As the reconstruction project came to an end and with Christmas approaching, sales have picked up. The downtown area "looks good" after its upgrade, she said. "It brings the charm back to Milford."

Walmart's new store going up

SEASONAL CELEBRATION -- Jerry and Kathy Cook are observing their 25th year operating Cook's Evergreen Farm in Readington Township, with gifts and prizes for customers that Mr. Cook says 'are like family to us.'
READINGTON TWP. -- As Jerry Cook celebrates the anniversary of Cook's Evergreen Farm on Railroad Lane off School Road here, he can't help but look back at how it all began 25 years ago.
Mr. Cook and his wife Kathy had just closed on the farm in November and planned to move here from South Plainfield. The farm's previous owner had planted the trees, but then died just before they were mature enough for sale. The Cooks were driving up the farm's driveway, and noticed someone following behind. When they got out of their car, the visitor asked Mr. Cook, "Can I tag a tree?"

Kingwood teen has a mind for business

AMAZING KID Kaitlynn Zolnay of Kingwood Township displays two products of her business Orchidaceous. The Delaware Valley Regional High School senior photographs pictures of orchids and sells them online and at home parties. She recently received an Amazing Kids in Business award from the county Chamber of Commerce. The Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce recently honored six high school students for their entrepreneurial achievements or contributions to the community. We'll be profiling the winners over the next few weeks, starting here with Kaitlynn Zolnay of Kingwood Township.
Kaitlynn, 18, a senior at Delaware Valley High School and this year's drum major with the marching band, received honorable mention in the Amazing Kids in Business category.
"I have a passion for entrepreneurship," she said.
Cut glass site OK'd for homes

FLEMINGTON -- Houses may replace the mostly vacant commercial buildings at the Flemington Cut Glass site. After nearly 10 months of hearings and more than 15 hours of total testimony, the borough Board of Adjustment granted Fieldstone Development a use variance to build townhouses in the commercial zone.

NEW BISTRO IN TOWN -- Chefs Brit Ash (left) and Robert Johnson step out of the kitchen long enough to pose in the new restaurant they've opened together in Raritan Township. RARITAN TWP. -- Chefs Brit Ash and Robert Johnson had been batting around the idea of opening a restaurant together for years. So, when space became available recently next to Mr. Ash's Cook-To-Order delicatessen on South Main Street, they wasted little time.
The result is South Main Bistro, which opened for business last month.
Mr. Ash, 36, is a Flemington resident and Hunterdon Central graduate. He has worked at the Harvest Moon Inn in Ringoes and the Ferry House in Princeton. Mr. Johnson, 37, is a South Hunterdon graduate and former co-owner of Giuseppe's restaurant in Lambertville.

LEBANON -- Cooked-to-order meals and roller-skating car-hops don't seem to be enough to tempt some borough residents to support the Sonic restaurant proposed for the Route 22 property that was part of Daub's Nursery.
A third hearing of applicant Thomas Masica's plan is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. in Borough Hall.

RARITAN TWP. -- Management consultant Mark Winey spends a lot of time on the road, so he is always open to ideas that help save on fuel costs. When he found a program that would let him buy prepaid gas cards at a 20% discount, he liked the idea so much he decided to become a franchise owner.
Mr. Winey runs Clarity Management, which works directly with other businesses, but his new second business, National Gas Club, is for both business owners and members of the general public.

CUSHETUNK MANOR -- This elegant shopping center could be constructed on Route 22 across from Bishop's Plaza in Whitehouse Station if the builder receives permission from Readington's zoning board. Designed by architect Hiland Turner of Bernardsville, the building would house retail shops on the first floor and low- and moderate-income apartments on the second.That's what local builder Tom Flath says about his plans to develop the property across from Bishop's Plaza on Route 22 in Whitehouse Station. The two-story building he'd like to construct there would look like a large manor home, he said, and would house retail shops downstairs and apartments upstairs.
Pfaltzgraff will close outlet around holiday

FLEMINGTON -- The Pfaltzgraff outlet in Liberty Village is going out of business and will close sometime around Christmas. The shop, which has been in the old Stangl Pottery building since 1978, is one of 39 Pfaltzgraff stores nationwide that will close their doors this winter.

Even as technology transforms the classroom, Polytech is having success preparing vocational students the old-fashioned way: through apprenticeships. There are 117 students pursuing degrees and certifications through the school's apprenticeship program, with nearly 40 county professionals mentoring student tradesmen in the field.

TURNING SQUASH INTO GOLD -- Chef Hwang June Jan of Jan's China Gourmet in Whitehouse Station takes first place honors at the 2008 IKA/International Culinary Olympics in Germany on Oct. 22 for these intricate banquet pieces carved from acorn squashes with edible sculptures inside.WHITEHOUSE STATION --The chef/owner of Jan's China Gourmet on Route 22 has won a gold medal in the 2008 international culinary Olympics in Germany.
Chef Hwang June Jan took first place honors in the cold food artistry event, preparing 10 dishes ranging from appetizers to desserts that would be served and displayed at a high-end banquet. The competition attracts about 1,500 chefs and thousands of spectators. More than 500 chefs competed in his event, Chef Jan said.

READINGTON TWP. -- Merck and Co., which has its headquarters here, is eliminating another 7,200 positions -- 6,800 active employees and 400 vacancies -- across all areas of the firm worldwide by the end of 2011. About 40% of the total reductions will occur in the United States but spokeswoman Amy Rose said the impact operations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania may be "relatively small," as the company "contracts in some areas, then expands in others."
The latest job cuts add to the 10,400 positions the drug maker has eliminated since 2005, when it began an effort to reduce costs substantially.
