  • Flemington architect updates without modernizing

by Matt DeBlass / Hunterdon County Democrat
    Wednesday January 07, 2009, 12:22 PM

TASTEFUL DESIGN -- The restoration of this building at the corner of Main and Mine streets, which houses Fusion restaurant, is just one of more than a dozen projects architect Chris Pickell has designed in Flemington.

FLEMINGTON -- Eighteenth- and 19th-century builders had no way of knowing that their creations would someday need to accommodate things like indoor plumbing and Internet connections. Gracefully integrating modern necessities into historic structures has become a staple of architect Chris Pickell's business.

    Thrift stores ease hard times

by Renee Kiriluk-Hill / Hunterdon County Democrat
    Tuesday December 30, 2008, 1:14 PM

THE LORD'S CLOSET is now more of a showroom. Wally Crowley, founder of the Readington Township faith-based nonprofit, arranges the merchandise in his Route 22 store.

The recession has collided with the environmental movement to replace the stigma of shopping at thrift or consignment shops with a sort of cachet. Donors are doing their part by recycling.

    The perfect gift

by Lillian Schupe / Hunterdon County Democrat
    Thursday December 25, 2008, 6:04 AM

HORSES, both real and model, are a big part of Lillian Shupe's life now, but never a part of Christmas. Here she is with Yasmin Lee N, a Standardbred racehorse trained by her husband, Jim and her model of The Black Stallion.

When I was in the fifth grade I read The Black Stallion by Walter Farley.

From then on I asked for a horse every Christmas. I knew it was a fruitless exercise but it didn't stop me from asking. Hey, one can always hope for a Christmas miracle.

Keeping Christmas: Memories help make the holiday

by Lillie Dorchak / Hunterdon County Democrat
    Wednesday December 24, 2008, 11:47 AM

    Skinny Santa
As a child living in Manhattan in the '40s, just after World War II, I had some great memories, and they all spring to life when I pull out the Ugliest Santa Claus of All.

Just after the war, Japan was recovering from a devastating defeat and lots of "Made in Japan" goods flooded our markets, among them a skinny Santa made of oil cloth stuffed with straw.

LINK fares to rise for 2009

    by Hunterdon County Democrat staff
    Wednesday December 24, 2008, 6:10 AM

Fares on the county LINK buses are set to increase beginning Jan. 2. Some will double. The Freeholders approved the new prices after a public hearing on Nov. 7. It's the first fare increase since 1990.

LINK ridership is up, said Pamela Pontrelli, director of Human Services, the county department that oversees the program. But she said falling revenues from state transportation funding and casino revenues have failed to keep pace with expenses, which are expected to top $4 million in 2008.

by Mary Heffner / Hunterdon County Democrat
    Tuesday December 23, 2008, 12:01 PM

FROM AGE 6, Mary Heffner drew the images that became her family's Christmas cards for 14 years.

It's that time of year, when you open your mailbox and scattered among bank statements and sale advertisements are the large colorful envelopes of greeting cards.

Whether from distant friends and family, gracious real estate agents and attorneys, or someone surprising, there is no better way to say, literally, "season's greetings" than with a holiday card.

Food banks across the nation are unable to keep up with demand. Even in wealthy Hunterdon County some people are barely hanging on.
