Dawn patrol: too late for (gobbling) turkeys

    by Brian Donohue/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday November 26, 2008, 9:11 AM

Since we launched the Ledger Live webcast in July, the learning curve has been steep. Every day there are things we realize we did wrong and can do better. Yesterday, I learned another key lesson: if you want to shoot video of live turkeys, don't wait until the last minute.

We planned to shoot some footage of live turkeys for today's Thanksgiving-themed show, maybe record the intro or interview a turkey farmer standing alongside some gobblers in a barn somewhere. After my calls to a local turkey farm went unanswered, I decided to just show up at the farm and wing it. But I was too late.

Turkeys at the Hinck's Turkey Farm in Wall Township, 1995.

"No turkeys in the barn,'' the farmer told me with a smile. "The only thing we have out back is horses. The turkeys are all in bags. There's no clucking going on around here any more."

Note to self: Next year, shoot video of live Turkeys in EARLY November.

Leaf blowers: love 'em or hate 'em

    by Brian Donohue/The Star-Ledger
    Tuesday November 25, 2008, 8:57 AM

It is one of the great debates of our time. Or at least the month of November, anyway: To rake or to blow one's leaves. I have found one truism about leaf blowers: people either love them or hate them. And while it may sound silly at first, the decision to rake or blow may say a lot about us. What does it say about our values? Our politics? Our personality? And what does it say about people who absolutely hate leaf blowers, who rage against them as an affront to all humanity?

Perhaps the most ridiculous use of a leaf blower ever documented.

Ledger Live will probe this issue today and you won't want to miss it. We'll have appearances by Star-Ledger columnist and blower hater Paul Mulshine, an octogenarian raker and even a spontaneous heated debate that broke out in the newsroom over the issue.

    See you at noon.

Until then, shoot us an email at ledgerlive@starledger.com
