Man suffers artery cut after punching through glass door
by Alex Zdan/The TimesSunday November 16, 2008, 9:08 PM
TRENTON -- A man who cut an artery in his arm when he punched the glass out of a front door Saturday night was taken to Capital Health System at Fuld as a trauma patient, police said.
The unidentified 38-year-old male hurt himself at a home on the 200 block of Whittlesey Road, fire officials said.
The incident, which occurred just before 8:30 p.m., brought a response by Trenton Fire and EMS, Capital Health System paramedics, and police. Firefighters, who arrived first, applied pressure to the man's bleeding wound before he was transported to the hospital.
Fire officials said a firefighter came into contact with blood from the patient's wound. He went through cleaning and testing at Fuld to prevent the spread of any blood-borne contaminants and returned to work later that evening. No information on the victim's condition was available.

West inspires middle school students
by Lisa Rich/The TimesFriday February 08, 2008, 11:59 AM
TRENTON -- Admittedly, renowned intellectual Cornel West doesn't know much about living in the hood.
While, he can't sit there and say he knows what's it's like to grow up here in Trenton -- he can imagine, and he sure can inspire.
The Oklahoma-born philosopher grew up in a black neighborhood in Sacramento -- where he guessed life is much different than the day-to-day happenings in New Jersey's capital.
"In a neighborhood, there's love. But in a 'hood,' there's hate," West told students yesterday while speaking at Dunn Middle School. "I grew up surrounded by love. I recognize there are realities young people deal with here that I don't know anything about. But in the end, all of us in life have to find a calling, not just a career."
Recognizing February as Black History Month, West is one of many speakers to visit Trenton over the next few weeks. More than 300 students and staff roared deafening cheers and confirmed "Amen" as he fielded questions from the audience, ranging from the upcoming presidential election to pursuing a college degree, and how to combat racism.
For 13-year-old Bindu Kanne, racism has a much deeper meaning.
Sweet faced and a tad shy, Kanne is a refugee from Liberia and is an ESL (English as a Second Language) student. She lives in a drug-infested neighborhood, and everyday, she hears something about how she's different.
"I get beat down; people say I sound funny because I'm African, or I look darker," Kanne said. "I always have to encourage myself to do well, to know I can make it."
She asked West, "Being black, how do you deal with racism?"
