Days after his death, convicted killer Zarinsky still hampers justice system

    by MaryAnn Spoto/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 6:15 PM

Even in death, suspected serial killer Robert Zarinsky continues to entangle the legal system.

Less than a week after he died behind bars, attorneys in a wrongful death suit, brought by the family of a Keansburg teenager killed 30 years ago, are headed to court Thursday to try to sort out the case.

Zarinsky's death last Friday night ended all hope for Jane Durrua's family to see him tried next month for the teenager's fatal beating and sexual assault in 1968. But the family's attorney is pressing forward with the civil suit.

Handcuffed and strapped to a gurney, Robert Zarinsky appeared earlier this year in Superior Court in Freehold to answer charges that he killed Jane Durria in 1968.

ACLU files suit on behalf of prohibited prison preacher

    by Jeff Diamant/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 6:12 PM

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit today on behalf of a prison inmate in Trenton, contending his religious freedoms were violated when prison officials forbid him -- an ordained minister -- from preaching.

Howard N. Thompson Jr., convicted of murder in 1985 and sentenced to 30 years to life, was ordained as a Pentecostal minister in 2000 and preached regularly for other prisoners for years before corrections officials in June 2007 prohibited preaching by inmates.

On tape, terror suspect says he's 'going to start something'

    by John P. Martin/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 5:59 PM

For nearly 40 minutes one night in March 2007, Dritan Duka and his two brothers sat in his Cherry Hill home listening intently to "Constants of Jihad," a recording they had downloaded from the Internet.

The lecture, from a Yemeni cleric, called Muslims to arms and urged them to consider themselves holy warriors when others call them terrorists.

"I'm going to start something," Duka said the next day, according to recordings played today at his terrorism conspiracy trial in Camden. "We have enough people. We are seven of us...You can do a lot of damage, seven people."

Group sues New Brunswick officials in change-in-government flap

    by Chandra M. Hayslett/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 5:46 PM

The grass-roots organization working to change the form of government in New Brunswick filed a lawsuit today against the city clerk and council, seeking to overturn the clerk's decision that denies residents a say in determining the next form of government.

City Clerk Daniel Torrisi twice denied petitions submitted by Empower Our Neighborhoods, which collected hundreds of signatures of residents who want to vote on if the form of government should change, from an at-large to ward-based system.

EON hopes the latest lawsuit, filed in state Superior Court, will allow the people's voices to be heard.

Murder suspect's mother testifies son suffered behavioral problems

    by Margaret McHugh/The Star-Ledger
    Wednesday December 03, 2008, 4:29 PM

Four months before Jonathan Zarate killed his next-door neighbor in July 2005, his mother took him to a psychiatrist because she was concerned he was defecating in his pants and all over the bathroom, showing an aversion to touching items and and taking very long showers, she testified today at his murder trial.

But the psychiatrist who evaluated Zarate in March 2005 did not diagnose the teen with any mental illness or prescribe any medication, and concluded the problem was a lack of communication between Zarate and his mother, Flora Mari, Morris County Executive Assistant Prosecutor Robert Lane pointed out.

Flora Mari, the mother of accused killer Jonathan Zarate, testifies today during his trial in Morristown.
