  • Stocks plunge 733 points amid renewed economic worries

    by The Associated Press
    Wednesday October 15, 2008, 4:30 PM

NEW YORK - Despair over the economy sent Wall Street plunging again today, propelling the Dow Jones industrials down 733 points to their second-largest point loss ever. Stocks fell on a combination of disheartening economic data, including a big drop in retail sales and a Federal Reserve report that said tight credit conditions are hurting businesses across the country.

The government's report that retail sales plunged in September by 1.2 percent -- almost double the 0.7 percent drop analysts expected -- made it clear consumers are reluctant to spend amid a shaky economy and a punishing stock market.

The Commerce Department report was sobering because consumer spending accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity. The reading came as Wall Street was refocusing its attention on the faltering economy following stepped up government efforts to revive the stagnant credit markets.

Stocks decline amid worries about economy

    by The Associated Press
    Wednesday October 15, 2008, 9:45 AM

Stocks are falling sharply in early trading today after economic readings raised the possibility that the country is either in a recession or moving toward one.

Traders work the floor at the beginning of the trading day at the New York Stock Exchange today.

The government's report Wednesday that retail sales plunged in September by 1.2 percent is fanning concerns about consumers. The decline was steeper than expected and is worrisome because consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.

    by The Associated Press
    Wednesday October 15, 2008, 9:11 AM

Retail sales fell off a cliff in September, plunging by the largest amount in two years as worried consumers shunned the malls and auto showrooms in the midst of the country's financial meltdown.

The Commerce Department this morning reported retail sales decreased 1.2 percent last month, nearly double the 0.7 percent drop that had been expected. The surprise showing significantly increased the risks of a recession because consumer spending is two-thirds of total economic activity.

by The Star-Ledger Continuous News Desk
    Wednesday October 15, 2008, 8:54 AM

Morning commuters gazed nervously skyward in downtown Newark this morning as a circus daredevil walked, then bicycled, across a tightrope suspended high above Mulberry Street.

Nik Wallenda, seventh generation of the Flying Wallendas, performed the stunt outside the Prudential Center and drummed up a small media circus to coincide with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's first Newark appearance in 52 years.

"It was a little hairy for a bit there," said Wallenda, who performed without a safety net and set a Guinness World Record for the longest and highest bicycle ride on a tight rope.

The report said James Silkensen, president of the New Jersey League of Community Bankers in Cranford, said "there are not many, if any, New Jersey banks that are in need of that direct injection of cash." N.J. bankers said in the immediate term, owners of small and medium-sized businesses would benefit from the Federal Deposit and Insurance Corp.'s plan to provide unlimited, temporary coverage of non-interest-bearing deposits.
