Each American is responsible
As time grows nearer to the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, I want to make sure Americans remember who they are and where they came from.
•
Rebirth
As I ponder the choice of Barack Obama by our American electorate, I am also reading a biography of Zora Neale Hurston, a very successful African-American writer. She gives me insight into how changes taking place in New York City's Harlem district had a profound effect on black people's pride.
•
Fear ravages of vice president's chicanery
The author of the letter "Obama will remain darling of the media" (Nov. 28) is correct in that the media, for better or for worse, are our "watchdogs of our elected officials."
•
Impeachment-pushers will be disappointed
For at least the last six years, The Times has been running letters calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Even today, with Congress in recess and the clock almost expired on the Bush term, the letters continue.

Loving parents await, who happen to be gay
In his article "A healthy society" (Nov. 25), Gregory J. Sullivan takes the courts to task for defy ing "popular sovereignty." I can understand these principles as a matter of balance of power. However, the value of "popular sovereignty" depends on the circumstances. After all, it's a small step from such "sovereignty" to "tyranny of the majority" or even "mob rule."
•
Cold facts vs. global warming
Since Nov. 18, the normal high temperature has been hovering around 15 degrees colder than the historical normal temperature of 55 degrees. The normal low has been about 10 degrees lower than the normal temperature of 36 de grees. The national weather forecasters are predicting this same weather pattern going into the be ginning of December.

In defense of humanism
I was quite surprised, on several levels, by the letter attacking humanism, "We claw our way to the top of the heap" (Nov. 21). The writer shows he does not understand humanism when he states that humanists must "tell us how their worldview can ac count for such concepts as ... goodness." With a minimum of effort, such as a Google search, the writer would have found his answer on the website of the American Humanist Association (americanhumanist.org), or the recently founded Brights movement (the- brights.net). It would seem, instead, that he would prefer to confront a straw man rather than do the hard work of truly considering the core principles of a philosophy different than his own.

Tie a red ribbon against drunk driving
As we approach the upcoming holiday season, Mothers Against Drunk Driving-New Jersey, along with Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapters nationwide, is once again launching our Holiday Crackdown Campaign, which runs from the day before Thanksgiving through New Year's Day.
•
Error and trial
There is considerable evidence that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have committed high crimes and misdemeanors, including presenting false evidence to Congress that led to the war in Iraq, supporting torture and ordering illegal wiretaps. They should be publicly tried.
•
Unpardonable
If this Congress allows President George W. Bush to pardon Vice President Dick Cheney and himself, it will not only injure the spirit of the country but it will send a signal to all leaders, both in politics and business, that they can get away with it, too.
•
Grocery-bill blues
Thank heaven gasoline prices have come down more than $1 and stores are having big discount sales.
•
Impeach, move on
President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney should be impeached. Not out of spite, malice or payback -- but simply because they should be held accountable for what they have done.

Basketball benefit a three-point shot
Last weekend, the Sharon Elementary School in Robbinsville held a benefit for a kindergarten student with incurable cancer. The event was organized by teachers and it shared a valuable lesson for all of us. It showed the purpose of commitment, the power of community, the impor tance of focus and the necessity of caring. It taught us all how a small seed planted can grow into a tre mendous tree with branches reaching up and out, touching everything around it.
