Biden stuck to the facts, ma'am
In last week's vice-presidential debate, Gov. Sarah Palin rarely used facts and resorted to telling tall tales that evaded the questions. I am weary of politicians such as Gov. Palin who can't cope with issues.

State workers' presence engenders state worth
I am incredulous at the letter "Eliminating a holiday engenders state costs" (Oct. 2), asserting that the elimination of a holiday is harmful to the state budget. Could the author be asserting that the productivity of the average state worker does not justify the operating expenses of "electricity, water, etc."?

Sharing a pint isn't the point
After all the talking heads are done dissecting Thursday's vice- presidential debate, the bottom line is that we had one candidate who spoke from knowledge and one candidate who spoke from memorized talking points and tried very hard to be the one we'd "like to have a beer with."

    McSorley for sheriff
Republican candidate for Mercer County Sheriff Jim McSorley needs our votes to help him reduce Mercer County's crime rate and to make better use of our taxpayers' dollars.

    Consult the experts
Why is it that, after years of mismanagement, a decision has to be made in a week without consulting with the experts? I submit that Congress is not the expert in this matter and needs to hear from noted economists first before rushing into a solution that is proposed by our president and his administration.

It's evident: We need new leadership
The financial and economic di lemma in which we find ourselves today actually started some 13 months ago. Members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, and the Bush administration did absolutely nothing to correct it.

    Obama-Biden will turn things around
The war in Iraq has drained the American treasury of hundreds of billions of dollars, and we have lost more than 4,000 American soldiers in this senseless war under the Bush-Cheney administration. When we vote for our next president, we need to take into consideration the war, the economy, health care and all the many difficult situations we are facing.

    Toxic cache on wall Street
The Bush administration unsuccessfully tried to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Obvi ously, they were looking in the wrong place. The WMDs were on Wall Street all the time.

Yet again, McCain puts country first
John McCain's response to the lack of action by Congress on the financial bailout proposal was to suspend his campaign and go to Washington, D.C., to help forge a compromise. Barack Obama's response was to continue his campaign. Sen. McCain again put his country ahead of his political am bitions. Sen. Obama again put his political ambitions ahead of the country.

    Wear liberal label proudly
I have only one complaint about Barack Obama and the Democrats. Instead of hiding from the liberal label that the Republicans consider pejorative, they should claim it proudly.

    Race-based thinking has no place
I read in The Times the article "Race could be factor in deciding president" (Sept. 21). We are all part of one race -- the human race. I hope that the leaders of the world, especially our religious leaders, would point out more often that being prejudiced is wrong and perhaps, one day, put an end to the stupidity.

It's fine to fine 'em, if you can find 'em
It was with great amusement that I read "Fine for littering in city may double" (Sept. 20). The article reported that the city council will vote on an ordinance to increase the fine for littering from $50 to $100.

If we bail them out, we own them
If homeowners or small-business owners mishandle their af fairs, they lose ownership or go out of business. If the owners of huge financial institutions mishandle their affairs through greed but are "too big to fail," then they should lose ownership.
