SPFMBA golf outing was a fundraising success thanks to support

The second annual SPFMBA golf outing was held on Oct. 6, and was again a very successful fundraiser for the Association. Thank you to all of the local sponsors for their generous support and to all of those who participated in this year's event at Shackamaxon Country Club.

Thanksgiving turkey drive at Temple Emanu-El of Westfield

WESTFIELD--Temple Emanu-El of Westfield is asking the community to bring frozen turkeys for the annual Thanksgiving turkey drive at 756 East Broad St.
Bring frozen turkeys in a tied plastic bag, and canned and packaged goods suitable for Thanksgiving (no glass) to the Temple parking lot during the following dates and times: Nov. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and Nov. 25 from 3:30 to 7:15 p.m.
The food will be distributed by Yes, We Care Soup Kitchen, The Mandy Reichman Feeding Program and members of Temple Emanu-El of Westfield.

Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Boys Black Swim Team falls to Red Bank

SCOTCH PLAINS--After last year's first place dual meet finish among New Jersey YMCAs top tier, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Boys "Black" swim team is finding out that it's hard to stay on top. In their second meet of the year, the boys had some outstanding performances but were outscored by the boys' team from Red Bank.
The Individual Medley races went back and forth with Greg Baliko securing the only first place finish for FSPY in the 13-14 200 yard IM. Yet the boys earned enough points in the other races to remain tied after the IM races.
The remaining individual races were also close. For the 8 & unders, Zach Arber posted two first place finishes, in the 25 Freestyle and 25 Breaststroke, while Kyle Foster posted a season's best time and third place in the 25 free.
For the 9-10s, first place was notched by Matthew Auda (50 Fly) and Nolan Kearns (50 Breast). Best times were posted by Josh Davidson (50 Free) Colin Sullivan & Jake Lessner (both 50 Back) and Brody Rash (50 Fly).
Garwood gymnast makes the A team

GARWOOD--Alonza Klopfer, a nine year old Garwood resident, recently qualified for the 2008 USA TOPs national gymnastics team. TOPs (Talent Opportunity Program) is a talent search and educational program for female gymnasts ages 7-11 and their coaches. Every year, 20 girls in each age group are selected for Team A, from over three thousand hopefuls from around the nation, to participate in an all expenses paid, five day training at the Bela Karolyi Gymnastics Center in Houston, Texas. Two of Alonza's teammates, Guilia Arpino and Ashley Foss, received the honor of qualifying for TOPs national B team and are also invited to the camp.

WESTFIELD--"How the Turnpike and Parkway Got Their Tolls" is the shorthand title for the next program o f the Westfield Historical Society, scheduled for Nov. 21. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and is in the community room in town hall on East Broad Street.
Presenting the history of New Jersey's half-century old toll rolls, with a passing reference to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well, will be Garland "Bud" Boothe, former Westfield mayor and Trustee of the Society.
Westfield Weavers Guild to hold holiday sale

Karen Andrus, co-president of the Westfield Weavers Guild, is busy preparing for the group's 22nd annual sale.WESTFIELD--Each year members of the Westfield Weavers Guild offer unique hand woven apparel and household linens to the public at their holiday sale. This year is the 22nd year of the weavers' sale. Members of the guild have been busy weaving one-of-a-kind household linens and apparel for the sale.
The Westfield Weavers Guild is one of the country's oldest weaving guilds. It was formed in 1947 by twelve people interested in weaving and other crafts. The group has since grown to 25 members who meet once a month to study the art of weaving and its related skills.
The sale is Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 715 Dorian Rd., Westfield. The public is welcome.
Martin Wallberg American Legion Post 3 expands troop support and membership

WESTFIELD--Martin Wallberg Post 3 American Legion of Westfield is experiencing a period of growth despite the current economic downturn.
According to Pat Tighe, Commander of the Post, "We are delighted to be seeing lots of new faces at the Legion. I don't know whether it is the economy, a renewed patriotism, or the fact that over the past year Post activities is definitely growing."
On Nov. 28, guitarist and vocalist Lloyd Van Doren will provide entertainment from 8 to 11 p.m. to benefit the Post's Building Fund, dedicated to the maintenance, renovation and upkeep of Post headquarters. Following Van Loren's performance, Carol Mulligan, the Post's Women's Auxiliary President will host an evening of karaoke. Guests are asked to provide a $5 donation. Light snacks will be offered and there will be a 50/50 raffle.
On the horizon is the Post's annual Christmas party on Dec. 14. A hot and cold buffet will be offered and exotic drinks will be served as well. The party will be held from l to 6 p.m. and costs $12. The event is always a sell-out, get tickets early. They are on sale now at Post 3.
Cranford Historic Preservation Advisory Board to meet
